Flipkart, in order to become completely sustainable, has announced on Tuesday that they will transition to 100% Electric Vehicles by 2030 and has recently joined Climate Group.
EV100 is a global initiative by Climate Group, bringing together forward-looking companies committed to accelerating the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and making electric transport the new normal by 2030. They believe that electric transport offers a major solution in cutting millions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year, as well as curbing transport related air and noise pollution.
There are near 82 companies worldwide to have joined this initiative including Aeon Mall, Air New Zealand, Bank of America, Delta Electronics, HP Inc., Ikea Group, State Bank Of India, Unilever, Wipro and many more.
As a part of this commitment and wider approach, Flipkart had decided to go 100% EV for transportation and delivery services by 2030.
Flipkart’s head of sustainability and social responsibility, Mahesh Pratap Singh said, “This will be done through placing requirements in service contracts, installing charging infrastructure close to its 1,400 supply chain premises, conducting awareness programs and incentivising delivery executives towards the use of electric vehicles,”
Last year Flipkart had aimed to convert close to 40% of its delivery vans into EVs (electric vehicles) by March 2020, and it was also running pilot tests for the same in cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
And at the moment it has eight times more EVs on the road than last year. So it has pledged to take the responsibility of transforming into an all-electric vehicle delivery service company.
“We have seen great traction in the last 12 months or so. We now have EVs in 4-5 cities – there are pilots running in state capitals. We have 8-10 times more EVs on the road than what we had a year ago. A combination of all these has given us the confidence to be able to take the pledge to go 100 per cent EVs,” mentioned Singh.
EVs have already been stationed in Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Bhubaneswar. As the pilot tests have already been conducted, disposition of electric vehicles is set to begin by September in cities such as Pune, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Lucknow.
