Bollywood is one of the largest film industries in the world and is very popular. This industry is number one in the movie industry in India. However, even though it is very successful, there are many ups and downs in the Bollywood industry. People have not yet seen the dark side of Bollywood. Many Indian movies were banned due to nudity, sexual content, vulgar language, and violence. There are many Indian movies with nudity that got banned by the censor board. Apart from this, many other films that indulged in gender taboos, Kashmir issues, etc., were forbidden by the censor board. Here is a list of some of the movies banned by the censor board.
Top movies that got banned by the censor board:
1.Bandit Queen:
Bandit Queen was one of the most popular Indian movies with nudity that got banned by the censor board. This movie was straight up vulgar, offensive, indecent, and continued a lot of sexual content. Bandit Queen was based on the life of Phoolan Devi. Hence, as these tags did not look right to the censor board, it banned this movie.
2. Fire(1996):
Deepa Mehta’s direction is well-known across the world. However, one of his movies ‘Fire’ was condemned by the censor board and even the people. The fire was one of the Indian movies with nudity that got banned by that censor board. This movie created a lot of controversies. Even though with a good storyline and positive reviews throughout the world, this movie did not impress Hindu groups like the ‘shiv sena(1)’ and many more due to its explicit sexual content. The controversy ended up with the leading actors Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das receiving death threats.
3. Kama Sutra
A tale of love(1996): Kama Sutra faced a lot of wrath from the censor board as they deemed it to be ‘immoral,’ ‘unethical,’ and ‘explicit.’ This is coming from the people whose ancestors came up with the concept of Kama Sutra. Hence, this movie joined the list of Indian movies with nudity that got banned by the censor board. This movie depicted the love story of two couples in the 16th century.
4. Urf Professor(2000):
Urf Professor was another movie that clashed with the censor board. This was directed by Pank Advani and starred Manoj Pahwa, Antara Mali, and Sharman Joshi. In the end, this Indian movies with nudity and also violence and explicit sexual content got banned by the censor board.
5. The Pink Mirror(2003):
Even though The Pink Mirror was an experimental movie, this faced a lot of issues by the Indian censor board. This movie strolled deep down to the topics of trans-sexuality and transgender. This is one of the Indian films with nudity that got banned by the Indian censor board.
6. Paanch(2003):
Paanch is Anuraag Kashyap’s movie that faced many issues with the Indian Censor board. This movie is based on the Joshi-Abhyankar serial murder incident in the year 1997. This movie included brutal violence, very abusive language, and massive drug abuse. Hence, no wonder the Censor Board decided to ban this movie and forget about it.
7. Black Friday(2004):
Black Friday was adapted from the famous book ‘Black Friday- The True Story of the Bombay Bomb Blasts’ written by S Hussain Zaidi. This movie was directed by Anurag Kashyap and was considered too dark and violent to be released in India. This was one of the Indian movies with nudity and extreme violence. Hence, the Censor board took an obvious decision and banned it.
8. Parzania(2005):
Parzania was based on the Gujarat riots in the year 2002. This movie cut open the fresh wounds of Gujarat’s horrific past. Even though the storyline and direction were out of the world, Gujarat’s political parties decided it would be better if this movie were removed from the theatres. This movie won a National Award for its direction, screenplay, and acting.
9. Sins(2005):
Sins is a movie about a Catholic priest who falls in love with a woman and gets sexually involved with her. This movie is considered as the epitome of lust, obsession, and sexual content. However, the Catholics went against this movie as it unspeakably depicted their society. Hence, this is one of the Indian movies with nudity that got banned by the Indian Censor board and never saw the light of a single theatre.
