Short video making apps are gaining much popularity especially among the youth today. While TikTok stayed the top most popular short video platform, another platform that grabbed attention is Likee. In 2019, Likee registered 330 million downloads worldwide, and half of these downloads were from India. On 29th June, 2020, Govt of India declared banning of 59 apps including Likee on the grounds of 'stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India".
As such Likee is not currently available for download in India. Likee was launched in July 2017 and Singapore based Bigo Technologies is its Parent Organization. Bigo Technology co-founder and President Jason Hu had a very humble beginning. At the age of 19, Jason was working at a factory in China. Jason, who had a Junior College Degree, appeared for national graduate entrance exams, and got selected to do a post graduate computer science program at Peking University. Jason Worked with industry giants like Alibaba and Microsoft, post which he joined 'JOYY' (earlier known as YY). JOYY is a leading video based social media platform. JOYY founder Li Xueling was quite impressed with Jason's way of working, which made him select Jason as the co-founder of JOYY's Singapore based venture - 'Bigo Technology' founded in 2014.
Bigo Technology co-founder and CEO David Xueling Li holds a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Renim University of China. Xueling Li is also founded CFP.cn in the year 2000 , which is a copyright trading platform for journalists and photographers. From 2003-2005, Xueling Li worked as the chief editor at Netease.com, which is a Chinese portal, before staring JOYY in 2005.
